This paper reviews the role of void nucleation, growth, and coalescence on spall failure process in light metals. Based review open literature, preponderance evidence show that are prevalent metals such as HCP magnesium FCC aluminum alloys. The as-received microstructure its evolution play a crucial how voids nucleate, grow, coalesce. Nucleation these metallic alloys can be either homogeneous heterogeneous but at high enough stresses, both nucleation activated simultaneously. Secondary phase particles intermetallics strongly influence failure, through matrix-precipitate/intermetallic debonding or precipitate/intermetallic cracking during shock compression.
